Tories Plan Moral Tax For Marriage

davidelection.jpgDon't blame society’s ills on the amorality of capitalism, the doing-down of the working-classes or hooded sweatshirts.

None is to blame for society’s breakdown. Marriage is.

Well, so says Dave Cameron as he lurches to the right. He wants to give all those married Britons out there a big hug and a firm handshake. He wants to reward them with a tax break. Get down on one knee to your live-in lover right this minute – there may be money in it.

In an interview on the BBC’s Sunday AM programme, Dave says: “If you look at unmarried couples half of them split up by their child's fifth birthday. The figure for married couples is one in 12. So the evidence is incredibly strong ... we should recognise marriage in the tax system.”

However, this seedling of a proposed policy is worrying some Conservatives who fear that super Dave will stigmatise unmarried couples and one-parent families. But Dave is having none of it.

Says he: “We've got to look at the benefits system; we've got to look at how we support relationships, we need a big cultural change in favour of fatherhood, in favour of parenting, in favour of marriage ... we need to go right through our tax and benefits system and ask ourselves why is it encouraging people to live separately?"

A Conservative leader espousing ‘family values’? Expect the inevitable spate of sex scandals to start oozing from Tory central office any day now.
