He may have been famously referred to as ‘Mary Poppins’ by a couple of Newcastle United directors, but no-one could ever have mistaken Alan Shearer for the Queen,. Until now that is.
The BBC reports that hundreds of fake £20 notes bearing the image of the former England star have been seized by Trading Standards.
As well as Shearer’s face replacing that of the Queen on the notes, other current and former Newcastle stars such as Nolberto Solano, Mark Viduka and the permanently-crocked Michael Owen also feature on the fake money which was found during a raid at a car boot sale at Blaydon Rugby Ground in Gateshead.
Sheila Johnston of Gateshead Council says: “On the face of it, these are just a bit of fun - but its doubtful whether the owners of these images would share that view. These notes look just like real bank notes when they are folded in two, and we are very concerned that some people may be conned into accepting them as legal tender.”
No doubt this quirky little tale with give football pundits another massive opportunity to patronise the Geordie football fans. “What passion! What characters! Look at them with their big working-class bellies!”.
