You have to hand it to the nation’s water companies. While torrents of water burst out of their broken pipes they tell us to stop watering our lawns and when customers are left without mains water for over a week, they refuse to payout any compensation.
That’s the dreadful outlook facing Severn Trent customers who were caught up in the recent flood mayhem.
In all, 140,000 homes in Gloucestershire were left without mains water after a treatment station flooded. But as the loss of supply has been blamed on “unprecedented weather” the normal rules of the guaranteed standards service, under which consumers are eligible for up to £10 a day if supplies are interrupted, do not apply.
Severn Trent says it will make £3.5million available to support localities which have been affected by the flooding of the Mythe water plant.
But Sir James Perowne, chairman of the Consumer Council for Water Midlands, believes questions remain. Says he: “Could this have been avoided? And we need to find out what the people of Gloucestershire want.”
Surely what they want is compensation? Plain and simple.
